Col des Dards

Today was my last day with the lads. There is a big high pressure in Chamonix and today we had a next to perfect bluebird. In the afternoon there was a thin sheet of high clouds that kept the sun from being too warm.

We went col des Dards which is a ski tour that starts from Flegere ski system. After an icy traverse and  exciting side stepping above a cliff band, we put the skins on and started ascending up towards lac Blanc. From here there are quite a few ski touring options. Col des Dards is an easy ski tour and despite its closeness to the lift system it’s over seen by the crowds.

We went here to expect good spring snow but on our way up we noticed dry powder on the north east aspects. Happy days! I thought that was out of the question. It has been 10 days since the last snow fall and a couple of warm days that put a crust on all aspects up to 3200m. At least that’s what I thought.

Excited and happy we continued up to the col. After a well needed lunch we put the skis on and tried a few turns. Yepp, it was nice dry snow with no crust! We skied the first 250 vertical meters of the run and put the skins back on to do it again. After the second time we finished the run and had good spring snow for the last 800 vertical meters.

Thanks guys for another good day out.

A fantastic day. Linus is the Basset Hound of ski guides, able to sniff out some fresh tracks and powder after many days of pure sunshine.
